This wonderful oil painting is currently at the Tate Britain in the show  Artist and Empire.
The painter Thomas Hickey who travelled and worked in India for several years in the early 1800s  is thought to have been promoting Edward Jenner's new smallpox vaccination discovered in 1797.
The girl on the right is indicating her upper arm and announcing her readiness to be vaccinated.
