• PIONEERING PHOTOGRAPHY AND MENTAL ILLNESS

DR HUGH WELCH DIAMOND

PSYCHIATRIC INPATIENTS

With thanks to the National Media Museum and the Science Museum.

I have recently learned about the existence of Dr Diamond's photographs of psychiatric patients from the Nationam Media Museum blog and the Science Museum website.

Diamond was a psychiatrist and passionate photographer who believed in the ability of portrait photography to convey the subject's mental state. He took some wonderful portraits of patients throughout his working life.  His most famous contribution to the crossover between art and science was the paper he presented in 1856 at the Royal society of Medicine entitled ' On the Application of photography to the physiognomic and mental phenomena of insanity'.
