Here I must confess to having been a fan and follower of Snowflake Bentley's work for many years.  The book with hundreds of specimens of recorded and catalogued snowflakes is one of my most prized possessions .

When he was 15 years old he was given a microscope by his parents and began to attempt the vusualisation of snowflakes on cardboard. Soon after he received a camera and learned how to attach the camera to the microscope in an attempt to capture the snowflakes described by him as 'miracles of beauty' . Over the course of his life he took more than 5000 photos of snowflakes.

2000 original glass plate photomicrographs of snow crystals are now in the Buffalo Museum of Science whereas the Jericho Historical Society in vermont hold the largest collection of snowflake photos
