• FRONTAL LOBES AND CHURCH ARCHITECTURE

EMILY YOUNG

HEAD

PHOTO: H. BOWDEN-JONES

When I came across this large head with the clear demarcation of the frontal lobes I was truly happy, I perceived it as a rich and positive sculpture about the importance of thought.  Cogito ergo sum.

To Owen, who was with me, this head symbolised the damage that mental illness or neurological disease can inflict on a healthy human head and brain, to him the sculpture meant decay.  We have no idea what Emily thinks as we don't know her.

This was one of a series of heads placed in the beautiful cloister of Madonna dell'Orto, secluded and quiet, a long way from the bustle of the Biennale itself but still part of this year's exhibits.
