HAND AND MAGNET  1939-40

GYORGY KEPES

Photograph, gelatin silver on paper

From Tate collection Ref P80552

I came across this image recently in the Tate magazine and was interested in reading about Kepes as an artist with a specific interest in science.  He moved to MIT in the late 1940s to teach Visual Design.  During his twenty years of teaching there he worked closely with architects and scientists and during the 50s following a period of experimantation with abstract art he developed an interest in new scientific imagery.

In 1956 he published a book called The New Landscape in Art and Science, based on a show of the same name in which art had been created using medical images created with Xray machines, stroboscopic photography, electron microscopes, sonar, radar, high powered telescopes and infrared sensors.  ( Info from Wikepedia and Tate magazine)
